Care Instructions for the Finnish Sauna and Bio Sauna

export as PDF

General Description:
No other sauna cabin represents the origin of the European sauna tradition better than the classic Finnish sauna. It is still an essential element and important part of every wellness facility. Many variations and modifications of the Bio sauna are available in the meantime – up to the more and more popular outdoor sauna. Cleaning and product care of the cabin are the top priorities for a regular operation and to take pleasure in the use of the sauna. Every guest has to be informed that it is necessary to sit on a dry bath towel (sweat) during the sauna session.

Cleaning:
The floor of the sauna has to be cleaned every day. The lieing surfaces have to be pushed back under the highest bench for the cleaning. Special diligence has to be paid to the area around the bench feet. The floor may be rubbed if necessary. Sufficient ventilation is absolutely necessary after the cleaning.
The wood in the sauna cabin is extremely dry and therefore very moisture-sensitive. The wood paneling of the sauna cabin as well as the bench and seats may absolutely not be cleaned with a water hose or a high-pressure cleaner. This does also apply for the cleaning of the floor.
The lath surface of the benches and seats may be grinded with sandpaper or a grinder once or twice a year, even more often if it used heavily. Dusk masks or an exhaust device should be used for this kind of work. The bench and sitting surfaces may be cleaned with disinfecting agents on a regular basis. The use of a 3% hydrogen peroxide (e.g. perhydrol H2O2) is recommended. No toxic residual products stay behind if hydrogen peroxide is used; it dissociates into oxygen and water if it gets in contact with organic material. Other chemicals, acids, bases, or alcohol additives may not be used for cleaning or as cleaning additives.
The sauna paneling as well as the interior (benches, etc.) may not be impregnated or varnished. The wood surface on the walls and ceiling may be cleaned once or twice a year, even more often if it used heavily. The surfaces may be wiped off with a damp, well wrung out cloth (not wet and no hose and high-pressure cleaner). If necessary, tenacious stains may be removed with fine sandpaper, grit 280.
The oven does not need any special care. The lime and water residues on the oven outside may be removed with a commercial descaling detergent and a brush from time to time.
It is necessary to drain the not vaporized water with the stop cock after every sauna session, if the used oven is a vaporizer oven; the water vessel can be compared with a water boiler in the kitchen.
The herb bowl (herbs may only be put on the filter fleece) may also be kept clean. The water vessel may be decalcified depending on the calcifications on a regular basis. The decalcification may ideally be carried out with a commercial descaler (like for coffee machines). The vessel is filled up with water, the descaler is added and the oven will be heated up. The oven is turned off before the water starts to boil. The descaling liquid is drained and the water vessel has to be rinsed with sufficient warm water (until no odor residues are left).

Product care:
The sauna may be inspected for eventual damages in regular intervals, but at least once per week. Eventually occurring damages may be fixed immediately. Especially loosened screws have to be retightened immediately.
The screwing of the door handles may be retightened in regular intervals. The door hinges and the door snaps have to be greased regularly and readjusted if necessary. The door sealing may be checked for a good fit at the same time.
The douses (cold water on hot stone) cause corrosion and crumbling of the stone; this reduces the stone quantity in the oven. The stones should be replaces or at least refilled as soon as the heating rods are visible. Deposits are also built up on the stones with every douse. The deposits consist mainly of lime and water residues. It is necessary to replace the stones if they are whitish. Deposits on the oven base may be removed in regular intervals.
The oven power decreases and the desired sauna temperature cannot be reached anymore if the heating elements in the oven are damaged or broken down. This is a normal process as they are wear and tear elements. Heating elements may be replaced without extraordinary effort. It is the easiest to identify broken heating rods during the heat-up phase, as they do not have a “red-hot” surface in comparison to the other heating rods (check weekly).

Time Interval:
As described above.
