Care Instructions for Plexiglass, Acrylic Glass
General Description:
Plastic materials may generally be charged electrostatically and the plastic parts may draw dust. Rain and air humidity do prevent this phenomenon outdoors. Mechanical rubbing of the plastic surfaces, air circulation and dry room air may favor this phenomenon indoors.
Plexiglas (trade name) is chemically seen a product made of polymethylmethacrylate with the abbreviation PMMA, which is also named acrylic glass.

Cleaning:
Dust may almost not adhere on the poreless plexiglass surface. Dusty surfaces may be cleaned with water, with some added household dishwashing detergent, and a soft, non-fuzzing cloth or sponge. The surfaces may never rubbed dry. Do use a non-scouring detergent for a thoroughly cleaning, e.g. “antistatic plastic cleaner and protectant (AKU)”. A good, almost streak-free cleaning efficiency has a only with water damped cloth, e.g. “Vileda Microclean”. Benzol-free benzine (petroleum ether, light gas) may be used to clean tenacious, especially greasy stains. Plexiglas is very stress sensitive may in no case be cleaned with alcohol or solvent. The use of alcohol, acetone, or benzoles cause the formation of Craquelée (= mesh-like net of cracks on the surface).
The “refinish” of the smooth, polished plexiglass surface with polishing milk or polishing compound is very easy, even by hand. These products may also be applied with a superfinish device if a soft polishing cloth is clamped on or the superfinish device is used with a lamb fur polishing disk.
A scratch on the plexiglass surface can be removed easily. The damaged spot has to be rough-grinded with waterproof sand paper with a graining of approx. 240. The regrinding has to be done with a graining of 400 or 600. The grinded area has to be polished with a soft cloth and “acrylic glass polish and repair compound” or commercial car polish and buffing disk and polishing wax respectively.
Large-area glazings are usually cleaned with automatic cleaning methods. Mechanical cleaning systems, for example rotating brushed, wipers, etc, are not suitable for plexiglass. The brushes or the wiper scratch the surface.
Color sprays on plexiglass GS or XT may be, like graffiti, removed with water soluble brush cleaner. The color stain will be kept damp with a cloth soaked in cleaner. The residence time depends on the type and intensity of the stain and may be up to 20 minutes. It has to be rinsed with a lot of clear water afterwards.
Product Care:
A pretreatment of the plexiglass surface should not be done with color repellent substances.
The surfaces may not be rubbed with a dry cloth.
The regular application of “antistatic plastic cleaner and protectant (AKU)” may remain the dust-repelling effect for a longer period of time.
Time Interval:
The cleaning may take place depending on the degree of staining.
